A space for the races

The piazza in front of the Basilica soon became a popular site for "palio dei cocchi", a horse race established in 1563 between the four teams from the four quarters of the city (Reds – Santa Maria Novella; Greens – San Giovanni; Blues – Santa Croce; Whites – Santo Spirito). Four “cocchi”, very similar to ancient Roman chariots, went around the square three times, using two wooden pyramids as reference points. The winner received a velvet fabric or drape as a prize. The race was organised on June 23th, the day before the feast of St John the Baptist, saint and patron of Florence, on whose feast day the final match of the much celebrated Calcio Storico Fiorentino (an ancient form of football). In 1600, the pyramids were substituted with marble obelisks, and the Flemish artist Jean de Boulogne sculpted four bronze tortoises at the bottom of each.
