Queen mother’s house

The Luxembourg Palace was built between 1615-1627 for Maria de Medici. After her husband Henry IV was killed in 1610 (just one day after her coronation) she acted as regent until her 9 year old son, Louis XIII, came of age. For her new royal residence, she bought the hotel Flanco de Luxembourg –and some nearby properties– and asked architect Salomon De Brosse to build her a palace in the style of her old home in Florence, Palazzo Pitti. A true Frenchman, De Brosse built a palace in french style instead, hinting at the Italian model only in his use of rustication and elevations. For the interior, she asked painter Peter Paul Rubens to paint 24 works based on her life with Henry IV, today known as “the Maria Medicis cycle”. Sadly, she didn’t get the chance to enjoy the palace. In 1631, she was exiled by her own son, Louis XIII. Tragic!
