Α strictly female affair
Most of these statues depict naked female figures with folded hands over the abdomen (the left generally above the right), slightly bent knees and the head also slightly raised backwards. The male figure is rarely represented in Cycladic art and is usually represented as musician or hunter/warrior. The upright female figures, which dominate Cycladic art, have been interpreted as depictions of their dead, ascompanions, concubines, servants, as representation of their ancestors, even as substitutes for human sacrifices. focus on the religious dimension and explain feminine figurines as symbols of a great Mother-Goddess of fertility and rebirth, as divine wet-nurses, psychopomps, apotropaic symbols or even as worshippers. Some believethey should be placed mainly in places of worship, instead of burials. Most scholars, however, agree that the nude figurines and moreover the emphatic depiction of their chest and vulva symbolize the pregnancy period.. This is also supported by the fact that many of these figurines have swollen bellies, which undoubtedly indicate pregnancy, while others feature horizontal abdominal engravings, which are believed to symbolize postpartum wrinkles.
