5 Getaways near Athens that will amaze you!

A charming city, full of historic adventures and busy streets, Athens is definitely worth visiting, at least once in your life. However, after a few days, you may feel like exploring other near destinations as well, less busy & more summerish!

So here they are, five recommendations, five splendid destinations that I would suggest to a friend for a quick trip, especially in the summer season.

1. Nafplio

Nafplio is a quaint town with history oozing from its every pore. It seems like time froze at 1900’s as the town is full of neoclassical buildings, cute small alleys and has two fortresses ‒ one up the hill with a terrific view over the town, and one on a tiny island, a few yards from the shore. Right next to Nafplio you can find Mycenae, one of the most important sites of Greek civilization.  

2. Hydra

Small like the palm of your hand, Hydra has no cars whatsoever on its narrow cobblestoned streets, just donkeys. In addition to the traditional stone mansions and the amazing shores, Hydra has one of the most distinctive atmospheres, making it an attraction to artists, poets and musicians.

3. Aegina

Just a stone’s throw from Athens, this gem offers plenty of shores, the Aphea ancient temple ‒part of the “holy triangle” antiquities‒ and many traditional villages. The picturesque town has a beautiful marina known as Agia Marina with mountains that rise up from the landscape just beyond it.

4. Delphi

Located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi was once the site of the oracle Pythia, who thousands consulted with on their future. The Sanctuary of Apollo was the place where mortals could receive answers to their pressing questions.

5. Eleusis/Elefsina

Built around the Temple of Demeter, Eleusis is just 18 kilometers away from Athens. The town has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2021 and hopes to build a sustainable future through its art and culture, which both provide an energy to the town that cannot be denied. Visitors can feel the power of the town as they explore its historic streets.
