An unlikely fate

The driving force behind the new palace was Philip V, the first Bourbon king (the dynasty whose descendants still sit on the throne of Spain). He was the grandchild of King Louis XIV of France (the famous Sun King), but his illustrious ancestry did not guarantee personal competence. Philip was never expected to become a king, but he landed the throne of Spain when his great-uncle died childless. His 45-year-long reign (the longest in the history of the Spanish monarchy) was a balancing act between his desire for reforms and the ominous clouds of manic depression that plagued him.

The self-guided audio tour is designed to start at the Plaza de Oriente, facing the Royal Palace of Madrid (Calle de Bailén, 17 28013). The easiest way to get there is to take the subway (Lines 5 and 2- Opera Station). The tour ends inside the Royal Palace of Madrid
