The Waterfall
Beckford’s waterfall benefits from the rainy season: Water accumulates here at the waterfall and then runs along through the gardens and across the property. In fact, several water mines in the quinta work as a rainwater irrigation system. We will meet the stream that is fed by this waterfall a little later! Do you see the tree standing atop the waterfall? That’s a strawberry tree, or Chorleywood, a native Mediterranean tree that is abundant in Portugal and bears fruit all year long. Around it are several pine trees and one cork tree, which are also native to the area. On the lake you might be able to spot some water lilies, royal ferns and ginger lilies.

Directions to starting point
There is no meeting point. The self-guided audio tour is designed to start at the entrance of the Park and Palace of Monserrate (Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua, 2710-405 Sintra, Portugal). The easiest way to get there is by taking the hop-on bus 435, called the Villa Express, which stops directly at the entrance (Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua, 2710-405 Sintra, Portugal). The tour ends at the exact location, the entrance/exit of Monserrate, which is the same entrance from which you started. Nearby, you can also find the Pq Monserrate (Palácio de Monserrate) bus stop
