Egyptian gods in Ephesus

The large vessels importing goods from distant parts of the then known world were also bringing the locals into contact with new ideas, customs, and foreign cults. Thus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to us the fact that one can find in Ephesus a temple, which is popularly believed to be dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis. It is the best-preserved building in the agora, dating back to the 1st century BC. The temple was built in the Ionic order with a row of 6 columns on its short sides and 10 on its long sides while its facade was also adorned with a group of statues depicting the meeting of Odysseus with the Cyclope Polyphemus.

The location

Areas

Celsus Library: The Library of Celsus is probably the most famous landmark of Ephesus. Built-in the 2nd century AD and reconstructed in the 20th century, it is worth a visit inside! the building was erected to serve a double function: not only that of a library but also of a magnificent mausoleum to honor and bury a prominent politician.

Trajan’s Nymphaeum:  This monumental fountain was dedicated to Emperor Trajan and Goddess Artemis and reminds how Romans honored their rulers as well as their gods.

The Grand Theater: The Theater was used for many kinds of events: dramatic performances, concerts, and sports competitions. It is even possible that the first gladiatorial games in Asia Minor took place in the theater of Ephesus.

Church of Mary: The Church of Virgin Mary was the first church to be dedicated to the mother of Christ and the most significant building from Christian times in Ephesus.
