The Alhambra: A pearl set in emeralds
Described by poets as a pearl set in emeralds, the Alhambra reflects Islamic traditions and narrates the history of Spain before and after the Moorish occupation. Inhabited in the ninth century by Sawwar ben Hamdun, the Alhambra first served as a military fortress. In 1230, Ibn-Al Ahmar (Mohamed ben Al-Hamar) established the Nasrid reign during which the Alhambra came to its apogee. After the conquest of Granada by Christians in 1492, the palace lost its mythic glory but regained it during the 19th century thanks to European travelers and writers. In 1870, the Alhambra was declared a monument. Today, it is one of the most visited historical sites in the world. Welcome to the Alhambra Palace and discover the splendor of Moorish tradition.

The location
Areas
Justice Gate: The tour begins at Justice Gate. Constructed in 1348, Justice Gate was one of the main entrances of the Alhambra Palace. It preserves its original iron gate and on its facade, you can observe two par excellence symbols of Arabic culture: the hand of Fatima and a key with a cord.
Patio de los Leones: The most iconic place at Alhambra Palace is located in the heart of the Palace of the Lions and is surrounded by arched galleries and 124 marble columns. The patio owes its name to the 12 lions which support the 12 sided inscribed and sculpted basin of the fountain and throw jets of water from their mouth. Made from different sculptors, the 12 lions are the core of different theories concerning their provenance and their symbolization.Â
Court of Sultana Cypress Tree: Named after a famous old cypress, the court, part of Generalife, has a water stairway that is supposed to be the oldest staircase in the gardens, dated from Muslim period. The court and the cypress tree played a crucial role in the romance of a Sultana with a knight and later became the ideal scene for the novels of the 16th-century Spanish
