The Apostle of the East
The story of St. Paul’s cathedral begins in faraway Japan. In 1549, a group of three Jesuit priests and a Japanese convert to Christianity boarded a ship in Malacca (southern Malaysia) under the leadership of Father Francis Xavier, who was known as the “Apostle of the East”. The Jesuits landed in Kagoshima in Kyushu and embarked on a mission to convert the Japanese to Christianity. At first, the locals received them warmly, but soon things turned sour. Two years after landing in Japan, Francis Xavier packed his things and returned to Malacca. In 1552, though, he had recovered his good spirits and decided to try his hand at converting the Chinese. He landed on Shangchuan Island and waited for another ship to take him to mainland China but died on December 3, 1552.
