International Museum Day 2025 Events: Join the Global Celebration

On May 18, 2025, museums worldwide will celebrate International Museum Day, a global event led by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). This year’s theme, The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities highlights museums’ crucial role as adaptable, inclusive, and forward-thinking institutions at the heart of social transformation.

As communities worldwide navigate social, environmental, and technological change, museums are being called on to innovate, connect with new audiences, and build more resilient and sustainable futures.

A Vision for the Future

The 2025 theme emphasizes the evolving mission of museums in a world undergoing rapid transformation. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially:

  • Sustainable Development Goal for Decent Work and Economic Growth: Museums contribute to local economies by providing jobs and fostering cultural industries.
  • Sustainable Development Goal for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Museums increasingly integrate technology and innovation to enhance access and engagement.
  • Sustainable Development Goal for Sustainable Cities and Communities: As cultural anchors, museums help create inclusive, safe, and resilient public spaces.

In line with these goals, museums are embracing community engagement, digital transformation, environmental responsibility, and cultural inclusivity more than ever.
