What’s your name?
The term Old Cairo (Old Masr) really lives up to its name in this place. The area precedes the founding of present Cairo, dated to 969 CE. It was here that the ancient Christian and Jewish communities of Egypt used to live. Prior to their settlement and during Pharaonic times, the city was a small fortified settlement called Per-hapi-ion, which was later occupied by the Romans. During the Roman period, the name Babylon was used for the first time. It derived from the Greek vocalisation of the city’s previous name. It was called Babylon throughout the Byzantine period and until the Arab conquest of the city in 940–941 CE. The use of the name is still controversial since there is another hypothesis about its origins. Be patient and we will reveal all in another story!
