The old convent
The Museu Nacional do Azulejo (more affectionately known as Lisbon’s Tile Museum) was created in 1965 as an integral part of the Museum of Ancient Arts and acquired its present name in 1980. The museum occupies the impressive buildings of the royal Convent de Madre de Deus, founded in 1509 by Eleanor of Viseu (1458-1525), one of Portugal’s most influential queen consorts, universally known as Rainha Dona Leonor. The old convent is located in Xabregas, a neighbourhood in eastern Lisbon, and houses one of Portugal's most extensive collections of tiles.
