Fishing village to fortress
In the 9th century, the town of Havn, now known as Copenhagen, was an established fishing village and an important trading post. In fact, Viking settlements have even been found at Kgs. Nytorv (public square) that date back to the 8th century! The natural harbour facilitated herring fishing, which led to Havn’s growth in the early 12th century and secured its position as a trade city of strategic importance. Absalon, the man who is often credited with founding Copenhagen, built the fortress you see before you. Let’s now learn a little more about Absalon and how he came to be in a position of power.
