The bread-like wells
The excavations brought to light stone-lined pits, like broad wells, filled with broken stone vases and potsherds. They were named by the workmen kouloures, after a type of round bread that is widely popular in Crete. Evans, who also adopted the term, considered that kouloures were used as garbage depository. According to other theories, they were used as repositories for ceremonial offerings or grain storage. Now, it is believed that they might have been used to collect water that ran off the paved court and the flat roofs. Kouloures have also been found at Phaistos and Malia but their location and number are not the same. The only certain fact is that during the New Palace period (1700-1450 BC) the kouloures became obsolete and were eventually covered.
