While Jews have lived in Azerbaijan for many centuries, their arrival in Baku dates to the 1830s and their number increased dramatically during Baku’s late 19th century, early 20th-century “oil boom.” Jews became an integral part of Baku’s unique multicultural society, playing a big role in its intellectual and cultural life.
