The bather and the courtesan
A famous painting by Apelles, called “Venus Anadyomene” ("Venus Rising from the Sea") adorned the temple. Apelles supposedly used Phryne, a famously beautiful woman who refused to appear naked before strangers, as his model. Yet, during the solemn celebration of the Eleusinian Mysteries in Eleusis (near Athens), Phryne was said to have undone her hair and bathed nude in the sea before the incredulous eyes of the assembled Greeks. Others claimed that the painting depicted Panacaste, the mistress of Alexander the Great. Apelles fell in love with her, and Alexander relinquished her as an expression of admiration for the sublime artist. The Roman emperor Augustus took the painting to Rome and placed it in the temple of the deified Julius Caesar, considering Aphrodite his ancestor. In return for losing their precious painting, all the Koans received was a small tax discount. The subject of Aphrodite rising from the sea has remained tremendously popular in Western art throughout history.
