The goat-footed god and the emperor

Two springs on the hills south of the sanctuary supplied numerous fountains and cisterns in recesses along the retaining wall. The third recess to the left of the staircase contained a fountain adorned with a sculpture of Pan, the goat-footed god of the wild, in a cave. The first recess to the right of the staircase houses the rectangular base of a now-lost statue of the Roman Emperor Nero, dedicated by Gaius Stertinius Xenophon of Kos, personal physician to emperors Tiberius, Claudius, and Nero. Claudius amply rewarded him for his help during the conquest of Britain, but Stertinius probably repaid the favour by helping the emperor’s wife assassinate him. Remarkably greedy, Stertinius amassed the largest fortune known for a physician, yet still lamented that imperial service limited his wealth. Finally, three arched fountains further down the wall to the right probably served medical purposes. Patients could draw water with a submerged container to treat various skin conditions.

The Asklepieion of Kos is located just three kilometres from the town of Kos.

Directions to starting point

There is no meeting point. The self-guided audio tour is designed to start at the entrance of the Asclepieion at Kos (Agiou Dimitriou Street, 853 00 Kos, Greece). The easiest way to get there is by car or taxi. You can also take the local bus number 3 from Kos Town, located about 3.5 km away. The tour ends inside the archaeological site, at the Large Temple of Asclepius.

The large temple of Asclepius (12 min): Amid the whispering cypresses, the Temple of Asclepius rose in quiet majesty. Built from gleaming marble, it offered comfort to the sick and hope to all who entered. Today, as you walk through its fallen columns, you can almost feel the energy and devotion that once filled the air.

The fountain of Pan (8 min): Could a simple spring really wash away your troubles? At the Fountain of Pan, fresh water bubbled from the hillside, offering pilgrims a chance to cleanse body and spirit before entering the sacred sanctuary. Step closer and listen — every drop of water once carried a prayer.

The Priest Quarters (sanctuary) (7 min): At the Priest Quarters, faith carried more weight than any earthly remedy. Pilgrims laid down to sleep, trusting a dream to restore their bodies. Rituals prepared the soul for visions sent by the divine. Not all prayers were answered, but hope never left these walls.
