A Tale of Origins
Ever since the Iron Age, this was a coveted location and the city was time and time again conquered by different civilizations who wished to establish their presence in a strategic riverside settlement, effectively protected by the surrounding hills and blessed with fertile grounds and mild climate conditions. The identity of the founder of the city is lost in the mists of time, but legend has it that Ulysses is the mythical “father” of the city… We’ll never know, but historians do agree that the first dwellers of the city were of Phoenician origins, while later they were succeeded by the Romans, the Visigoths, the Muslim and finally the Christian forces of King Afonso, who conquered the city in 1147. Yet, archaeological discoveries prove that the region had been inhabited ever since the Palaeolithic era, way before the arrival of the aforementioned civilizations.
