One-eyed contractors
The Greeks believed that only one-eyed Cyclopes had the strength and skills to build walls with these gigantic boulders. The fortification system of Mycenae consists of huge, unworked limestone boulders that fit together without mortar or clay. The sheer weight of the stone (often several metric tonnes) is sufficient to keep them in place. Smaller stones filled any openings since the boulders were never carefully cut blocks. The tools of the Mycenaean architect were simple (bow-drill, bronze axes, adze blades) and much depended on the workers’ hard labour. It took at least four men to handle each massive boulder with the help of earth ramps and wooden rollers.
