A key building of the 20th century
Most of the pavilions for the exhibition of 1929 were built in a rather eclectic, conservative style, making the German Pavilion a stand-out exception. This simple yet avant-garde building boasted no main façade like palaces of old so often did – just a fairly naked, minimalist layout. The open, free plan was a novelty, aiming to represent the freedom and the democratic aspirations of the new German Republic which emerged after World War I. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, Barcelona Pavilion has been an inspiration for many generations of architects. It was dismantled shortly after the Exhibition, but local authorities and many architects in town believed that such an iconic building needed to be rebuilt in the 1980s, thus what you see today is a replica of the original.
