The most historic square
The church of Sant Jaume, located here until 1349, is long gone, but its reputation survives in the name of the square which since the city’s early history, has been at the epicentre of political events. It probably all makes better sense if you consider that the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, in other words, the City Hall, is located on the southern side of the square, while the Palau de la Generalidad de Cataluña, the Parliament of Catalonia, is on its northern side. Once also named Plaça de la Constitució and then Plaça de la República, this part of Barcelona takes us back to significant moments of Catalonia; the declaration of the Catalan Republic in 1931 and the 1977 fervent speech of Josep Tarradellas, the Catalan political leader who fought for Catalonia’s independence and sent from here a powerful message to support the Catalans’ right for autonomy upon his return from exile. And today? Sant Jaume is still a meeting point for protesters and locals celebrating the victories of their favourite team: FC Barcelona, the legendary Barca!
