The invisible hands

When construction of the tower began, materials poured into London from across the country — bricks from Hendon in Middlesex, stone from Anston near Sheffield, and steps and paving stone from Hopton Wood in Derbyshire. As with the Houses of Parliament, builders Grissell and Peto handled the structure up to the clock dials, while John Jay of London completed the dials and roof. For most of the time, workers remained hidden from Londoners, as the tower was built from the inside out.
