The First Inhabitants
The first settlement in Crete dates back to the Neolithic era, a period spanning between 6.000 and 2.600 B.C. Ruins from that period have been discovered in Knossos, Phaistos, and Sitia. According to the evidence, the first inhabitants, who probably moved to Crete from Africa, lived in caves and in houses made of local material, such as slate, a fine-grained, clayey metamorphic rock. They grew vegetables and cereals and their livestock were mainly pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats.

The Palace of Knossos audio tour begins just after the entrance to the archaeological site of Knossos (Knossos 714 09, Greece) and ends at the very same point. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum audio tour begins at the entrance of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (Xanthoudidou 2 Str., Τ.Κ. 71202, Heraklion, Crete) that can be easily accessed from Eleftherias square located at the center of the city.The tour ends at the courtyard of the museum which is inside the site.
