A story written in stone
The Giza plateau is a giant rock formation, created through the presence of Eocene nummulitic sediments 50 million years ago. Known as nummulite "banks", these are in essence accumulations of fossils, which are very typical of the area. At the same time, the Plateau was a large-scale limestone quarry supplying building material, and was the source of the stone used in the Giza funerary monuments. The names of the three Pyramid owners are Khufu, Khafre, his son, and Menkaure, his grandson. Giza is interrupted by the River Nile, which cuts the site in two. What we know as "Giza" today was nothing other than an arid stretch of desert about 12 miles northwest of the ancient capital of Memphis and about 8 miles from the modern city of Cairo. Despite its desolate appearance, the area was nevertheless dotted by countless architectural structures.
