Welcome to the Acropolis of Athens! The word Acropolis consists of two Greek words: Akron, meaning edge, and polis, which means city. In ancient times most city-states had their own acropolis but this particular acropolis was immortalized and is today so famous because it was the acropolis of a superpower! The 5th century BC was a great time to be an Athenian! After the defeat of the Persians in 479 BC, a new era of prosperity dawned for Athens which, under the leadership of the famed statesman and orator Pericles, became the unchallenged master of the Delian league and the most powerful city-state of the then known Greek world. With money flowing from the common treasury of the Delian League, the state embarked on a grand architectural project to reconstruct the Acropolis, which had suffered severe damages during the Persian wars. Most of the monuments you will admire over the next two hours were constructed between 447 and 406 BC. You will set out to explore, first, the south slopes and then gradually ascend to the sacred rock, upon which artifacts of timeless beauty will bring to life the glorious days of the Athenian hegemony!
