Knowledge, Secrets & Ancient Gods

Although there are no official documents proving António Monteiro was a Freemason, his deep knowledge of secret rituals and symbols related to this secret order support that theory. The triangle eye on the chapel's floor and the Initiation Well are two of the most striking features, with the armillary sphere and the Knights Templar Cross repeatedly seen around the property. The same goes for the gargoyles, ancient gods, and other mythological creatures. There is a clear glorification of the past, which is also referenced in the epic work on the Portuguese Discoveries, Os Lusíadas, by Luís de Camões. However, this isn't the only literary reference you'll find along the way. Now that you know there are hidden motifs and details all over Regaleira, let's explore!

  • The self-guided audio tour for Sintra City Tour is designed to start at the Volta do Duche. The easiest way to get there is by reaching the Largo C.M.Sintra bus stop (2710-631 Sintra, Portugal) and you’ll be at the right place to start the tour.

  • The self-guided audio tour for Pena Palace is designed to start at the Manueline Cloister in Pena Palace(Estrada da Pena, 2710-609 Sintra, Portugal). You can take bus 434 from the train station to the Palace. Once at the entrance, a staff member will check your tickets and let you in. This will be for the shuttle bus that will take you up to the palace; if you have this ticket, wait in line. It is advised to do so on rainy days. After getting to the top, you will arrive, either on foot or not, to the shuttle bus stop. Climb the rising path ahead of you as you see the Palace in front of you and continue on until you cross a large Moorish-looking door. You will be standing right outside the palace shop for a moment: in order to enter the palace, you must continue right, through yet another monumental door and through the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, it is possible that a staff member will take your ticket again and ask you for your time slot. If you are too early, they will have you wait until your time slot opens, but if you are on time they will usher you to the line (there is a 15 minute tolerance for delays). Follow the staff’s instructions until you are about to enter a door on a yellow building, up ahead, by when another staff member will request your ticket. Once you cross this final door, you will see a great bust of King Ferdinand II and a stairwell. Take the stairwell and you will arrive in the Palace Cloister. The tour ends at the Column Temple in Sintra’s National Park(Estrada da Pena, 2710-609 Sintra, Portugal).

  • The self-guided audio tour for the Moorish Castle is designed to start at the Second Circle of Walls of Moorish Castle (2710-405 Sintra, Portugal).  The best way to visit the Moorish Castle is through public transportation. Catch the line of the Sintra train (stops include Oriente, Entrecampos, Sete Rios, Rossio in Lisbon). Once you get to the Sintra train station there are many bus stops near it. The bus that takes you to the Moorish Castle is the 434. You can pay for the single ticket (3,95€) or buy the 24hour ticket which allows you to ride on all the buses for the day (11 €), whenever you like.

  • The self-guided audio tour for Quinta da Regaleira is designed to start at the entrance of the  Quinta da Regaleira (R. Barbosa du Bocage 5, 2710-567 Sintra).
