Fusion of Influences

One of the most interesting features of the monument is the coexistence of different architectural styles as a result of the multiple destructions and reconstructions of the temple. In 1701, the stonemason Domingo Laviesca built this ornate facade with numerous angles and chiaroscuros, accompanied by a succession of Gothic-style windows. Yet, the 17th-century reconstruction of the Parish of the St. Johns proved to be an entirely Baroque affair. Here on the southern side, a wall was raised to cover almost entirely the original Gothic buttresses and a continuous series of rectangular windows flanked by Doric pilasters was opened.
