Roman with a Greek twist
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus was the last public edifice that was built on the slopes of the Acropolis. It was intended for, mainly, musical events and could accommodate approximately 5000 people. Constructed in 161 AD, at a time when Athens was a province of the Roman Empire, its shape is semicircular, typical of the odeons of the imperial age. However, the construction does not entirely follow the Roman model, as it was not built on flat ground, but carved on the rock of the Acropolis like a Greek theatre. Therefore no arches and vaults were needed to support the cavea. Facing the skene, which is preserved today to a height of 28 meters, we do notice, though, the evolution of style, from the orthogonal simplicity ascribed to Greek classicism to the dynamic use of curves prevalent in Roman architecture.
