The victorious sultan
The outer facade is a horseshoe arch and bears an engraved key in its center, a typical Islamic symbol. Just above the arch is a three-line description in limestone and in cursive Arabic that writes: Indeed, we have given you, Muhammad, a clear conquest. That Allah may forgive you. His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path’’. This epigraph refers to Sultan Muhammad V, the facade’s commissioner, and underlines not only his glory but also the Nasrid family’s destiny and Islam’s triumph. The inner arch, in memory of the sultan's victory at Algeciras in 1367, is richly decorated with ceramic tiles and a lintel with voussoirs. The balcony is framed with the phrase “Only God is Victor” which refers to Allah’s divine presence in everyday life and the power of the Muslim religion.
