A Library’s Birth and Rebirth
The Library of Congress was born in 1800, when the new national government moved from Philadelphia to Washington. That April, Congress approved $5,000 to purchase books for its use — hence the name Library of Congress. Originally housed in the Capitol's north wing, its first collection of 3,000 volumes was destroyed during the 1812 war, when the British burned the Capitol in 1814. A year later, Thomas Jefferson came to the rescue by selling his personal library of 6,487 volumes to Congress. In 1897, the Library’s grand main building was completed and later named in his honor. Now, let’s take a closer look.
